UAV inspection and monitoring is currently limited by short mission durations. LandbotiX extends deployment time by enabling UAVs being flown in first person view (FPV) to land and perch securely in the environment, significantly reducing energy consumption and increasing observation time from minutes to hours.
Technology readiness: ~TRL 3+ (early prototype / proof of concept)
Most inspection UAVs spend the majority of their energy simply staying airborne. This limits missions to short flight windows and restricts their usefulness for inspections that require persistent observation, repeat measurements, or monitoring of slow-changing conditions. As a result, valuable data is often missed, and inspections must be repeated frequently at additional cost and risk.
LandbotiX has developed a perching UAV concept that allows drones to grasp and land on structures within the environment, such as pipes, railings, and structural elements. This could also be extended to things such as trees when used outdoors. By perching rather than hovering, the UAV dramatically reduces power consumption while keeping sensors positioned close to the asset of interest. This transforms short inspection flights into long-duration monitoring deployments.
LandbotiX has been designed with endurance, robustness, and operator usability in mind. Key features include:
Once perched, a LandbotiX-enabled UAV can:
All while consuming a fraction of the energy required for continuous flight.
LandbotiX is suited to inspection and monitoring scenarios where persistence is critical, including:
